Craniosacral therapy is a light touch hands on body work technique that works to release tension deep in the body. It relieves pain and dysfunction and improves overall health and performance. Craniosacral therapy was developed in the US in the 1970s by osteopathic doctor Dr. John Upledger. The ‘craniosacral system’ refers to the soft tissue and fluid that protects the brain and the spinal cord (the central nervous system). The central nervous system (or CNS) controls and influences every aspect of the rest of the body. Our body’s absorb routine stresses and strains in everyday life, but at some point, when tension increases, the tissues begin to tighten. This tension goes on to affect the health of the spinal cord and in turn the CNS housed there. As mentioned, nearly every system in the body is affected by the health of the CNS, so when there is disruption there, it can wreak havoc throughout the body. Craniosacral therapy releases these built up tensions stored in the body, and allows the body to relax and heal. Did you know our body needs to be in a state of rest state in order to heal (vs. in the fight / flight / freeze state)? I use a gentle touch to evaluate the internal environment and to release any restrictions that come up. By freeing the nervous system to work optimally, craniosacral therapy has the potential to help in countless concerns and to enhance overall well being. Some of the many indications for this treatment include:
Post concussion
TMJ pain
Headaches
Chronic sinusitis
Trauma
Excess and prolonged stress and anxiety
In fact this last point is the predominant reason I recommend Craniosacral therapy in my practice, and why I think it is the treatment for these times. Literally all of my patients can benefit from craniosacral therapy right now as an antidote to this extended period of alarm, uncertainty, and vigilance we have all endured. It helps usher in the calming, healing, and restful state that many are having difficulty accessing right now.
A craniosacral therapy session lasts roughly an hour, and patients are fully clothed laying quietly on the treatment table. I carefully start with my assessment, and then from my findings I make the gentle adjustments that are needed. What a patient experiences in their own session is highly individual. Most people find the sessions deeply relaxing, and some drift off to sleep at times. Craniosacral therapy is an incredibly gentle and very safe bodywork technique. It is suitable for all ages, and stages of life.
